Entering the US from an Islamic Country

Entering the US from an Islamic Country

24 Jul 2017 Karina S. Henkel

It’s just something you should be aware of when you travel into the US now. The US government has installed new safety regulations for travelers. And some of these rules state that every traveler, entering the US from an Islamic country, has to go through more security checks. But what really shocked me was that the person at the check-in in Berlin told me that I was not allowed to bring my laptop and iPad with me in my hand luggage. I had to give her my tiny laptop bag and she threw it on the conveyor belt with all passengers’ big and heavy bags and suitcases. I cringed. Would I see my laptop and iPad ever again? And if so, would they still be intact?

Explaining America to Family and Friends

17 Jul 2017 Karina S. Henkel

Explaining America to Family and Friends It’s impossible. There are so many pictures, prejudices, and information (false and correct) floating around that there is no way that I could ever explain what and how America is. And for some people it is also hard to grasp how different America and the Americans are depending on the...

Different Countries – And not so Different Insects

13 Jul 2017 Karina S. Henkel

Different Countries – And not so Different Insects In the US there are a couple of corners where you can find insects and animals that are truly dangerous for humans. Go Figure: Prejudices are Stupid

10 Jul 2017 Karina S. Henkel

Go Figure: Prejudices are Stupid 30 years ago I had a few bad experiences with a certain airline. They were unreliable and chaotic – and these words are, in my opinion, still a very nice way to describe what I thought about them back then.

Politics – Only Bearable from the Distance I am interested in politics – and I am not. I want to know what’s going on, but I also get so upset about what I hear and read that I often refuse to watch the news or read any articles.

First Day at the Beach

23 Jun 2017 Karina S. Henkel

First Day at the Beach For me, a day at a beach means this: roasting for hours in the sun, dipping my toes into the cold water once or twice, collecting rocks and sea glass, and watching seagulls stealing food from people’s hands and out of their bags.

Happy Father’s Day Yesterday, June 18th 2017, I made a mistake. I called my father in Germany and wished him “Happy Father’s Day”. He answered that with silence first and then asked me what I was talking about.

Passport Changes I still haven’t changed my name on my German passport. I know. I suck. But I keep postponing dealing with this, and it has been now five years that I keep procrastinating. I don’t know what my issue is, but it seems to be quite an ordeal to get all...
